Members works on WordPress multisite networks. Here’s what’s different.
Roles belong to each site
Every site in a network has its own roles. Changing a role on one site doesn’t change it on any other, and there are no network-wide roles. To use the same roles on several sites:
- On the site you’ve set up, go to Members → Roles and click Export All (or export just the roles you need).
- As a Super Admin, go to Members → Roles → Import on each other site and import the file.
A user needs a role on each site
Users are shared across the network, but roles aren’t. A user who can see protected content on one site needs a role on the other site too. If a page is protected there, they’ll see the error message until you add them to that site with the right role.
With Private Site on, logged-in network users who aren’t members of that site see a message that they don’t have access, with links to the sites they do belong to.
Who can edit roles
On multisite, Members doesn’t give site Administrators permission to create, edit, or delete roles. They can view roles and use Content Permissions. Network Super Admins can do everything, on every site.
If you want a site’s Administrators to manage roles, a Super Admin can grant that site’s Administrator role create_roles, edit_roles, and delete_roles under Members → Roles.
Other differences
- Add New User: the multiple-role checkboxes only appear on the edit user screen. New users get one role when you add them; add more roles afterward.
- Admin Access: Super Admins can always reach the dashboard, whatever the Admin Access settings say.
- Privacy tools: WordPress reserves the personal data tools for Super Admins on multisite, so the Privacy Caps add-on doesn’t change who can use them.
- Rescue link: Super Admins can use the Administrator Rescue Link.
