Settings

Members’ options live under Members → Settings. You need the manage_options capability (Administrators have it) to see this screen.

Roles and Capabilities

Setting What it does Default
Role Manager Turns on the Roles screens, where you create, edit, clone, and delete roles. On
Multiple User Roles Lets users have more than one role. See Multiple User Roles. On
Capabilities: Denied capabilities should always overrule granted capabilities When a user’s roles disagree about a capability, the denial wins. See Explicitly Deny Capabilities. On
Capabilities: Show human-readable capabilities Shows “Edit Posts” instead of edit_posts where Members knows the name. Capabilities from other plugins show their code name unless the plugin registers a label. On
Role Hierarchy Appears when the Role Hierarchy add-on is active. Choose whether users manage roles lower than, or lower than or equal to, their own. Lower

Turning off the Role Manager hides the Roles screens. Your roles stay exactly as they are.

Content Permissions

Setting What it does Default
Enable Permissions Turns on Content Permissions for your posts and pages. On
Hide Protected Posts from WP REST API Keeps protected posts out of the REST API for people who can’t view them. See Content Permissions: The REST API. On
Error Message The default message shown in place of protected content. Each post can override it. Shortcodes work here, including [members_login_form]. “Sorry, but you do not have permission to view this content.”

If you turn off Enable Permissions, nothing is protected, but the roles you ticked on each post are kept for when you turn it back on.

Setting What it does Default
Enable Private Site Sends every logged-out visitor to the login page. See Private Site. Off
REST API Requires visitors to be logged in to use your site’s REST API. See Private Site: The REST API option. Off
